What is BOTOX?
BOTOX Cosmetic is an FDA-approved treatment for minor to moderate static lines and wrinkles along the forehead and between the brows. It consists of a purified strain of type A botulinum toxin, which temporarily relaxes the facial muscles to achieve a softer-looking profile and enable the overworked muscles a chance to rejuvenate. The results provide a smoother and younger-looking complexion without having to undergo a surgical procedure. Board-certified dermatologist Dr. Mary Pentel is excited to offer BOTOX to local patients who wish to refresh their appearance. Contact Dermatology Southeast in Jacksonville, FL today to learn more. Is BOtox right for me?
BOTOX is ideal for people who hope to diminish or soften the appearance of lines along their upper face without surgery. It's also used as a preventive wrinkle treatment for younger patients who are starting to develop of static lines. BOTOX is a great solution for forehead wrinkles, parallel lines between the brows, and wrinkles around the eyes. If you have deeper lines, an injectable filler may be more suitable. During your initial consultation, Dr. Pentel can build a custom treatment plan that suits your specific needs.
how is botox administered?
BOTOX treatments are a convenient outpatient procedure at Dermatology Southeast. If it's your first time to visit our office in Jacksonville, FL to get BOTOX, we typically perform the injection during the same appointment as your consultation. We'll ask you to make different facial expressions using your upper face, like squinting, frowning, etc., which will allow us to see where to place the injections. This specific injection is most commonly administered between the brows, on the Crow's feet, and throughout the forehead.
We'll prepare your skin and inject BOTOX under it through a fine needle, followed by a cool compress to help prevent bruising, swelling, and discomfort. You can ask for a numbing cream to make the procedure more comfortable, but it usually isn't necessary. BOTOX injections typically take about 10 – 15 minutes, after which you can return to your normal routine with no required recovery period.
What happens after my treatment?
While you may return to your normal activities following the BOTOX injection, you should avoid strenuous exercise for a minimum of one day. You should also sleep with your head elevated for at least one night and should avoid touching your face, which may accidentally spread the BOTOX to other areas. The injected sections of the face may appear red, swollen, or bruised for a couple of days, but you should not experience any serious or lasting side effects. In many cases, it takes about 5 – 7 days before seeing the final effects of BOTOX. The results usually last 3 – 4 months. You should talk to your injector about when to make touch-up appointments to maintain your results.
